AI note-taker without a bot (2026): what records quietly, and what it costs

Some meetings don't want a "Notetaker" tile in the participant list: client calls, interviews, tenants that block bots. These tools can capture a meeting without a bot joining, from your device instead.

Prices and limits come from the vendor pages linked on this page, checked Oct 21, 2026. We have not tested these tools hands-on; “Unknown” means we couldn't verify it. Vendors change pricing often, so confirm before you buy.

No bot still means you need consent

A bot in the call is, at least, a visible notice. Without one, nobody knows they're being recorded unless you tell them. Recording-consent rules differ by state and country, and some require everyone's consent. A simple routine works:

  1. Add a line to the calendar invite: "This meeting uses an AI note-taker. Tell me if you'd rather it's off."
  2. Say it again in the first minute of the call.
  3. Keep a short list of meetings you never record (HR, performance, health, legal).

Some tools help: Granola lists a per-user "let people know you're using Granola" notice, admin-enforceable on Enterprise; Sembly lists notification and consent tracking on Pro and up.

FAQ

Which AI note-takers work without a bot?

Granola lists bot-free, device-audio capture on every plan. Bluedot records without a bot from its Chrome extension, desktop and mobile apps. Fireflies' Chrome extension records without the Fireflies bot. Sembly lists microphone recordings and media uploads.

Is a bot-free note-taker cheaper?

Not necessarily. Granola Business is $14 per user per month (billed monthly) and Bluedot Basic is $14 on annual billing (audio only). Fireflies Pro, which includes the bot-free Chrome extension, is $10 per user per month annually.

Do I need consent if no bot joins the meeting?

Recording and consent laws differ by location, and some require every participant's consent. A bot-free tool removes the visible notice, so tell attendees in the invite and at the start of the call. This is not legal advice.

Can bot-free note-takers record in-person meetings?

Granola lists iOS, Android and Apple Watch apps, Bluedot lists phone, tablet and Apple Watch recording, and Sembly lists microphone recordings.

Which bot-free note-taker has SSO?

Bluedot Business ($32 per user per month annual) and Granola Enterprise ($35) both list SSO and SCIM.
